WuZhen - Zhejiang Province : Wuzhen is one of the six ancient water towns, surrounding Shanghai on the Hangzhou - Beijing Canal. It has a history of over 1,200 years. In 1991, Wuzhen was authorized as the Provincial Ancient Town of History and Culture, so ranking first among the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River. Wuzhen; and life within the old town, is little different today then it was 500 years ago, only the people have changed.

Fortunately Wuzhen has not yet surrendered totally to the almighty tourist dollar and the town retains its history and culture. It is a living piece of Chinese history. Unfortunately it also has its pollution problems but efforts are under way to address these issues. As an Australian, the green/grey water is difficult to accept, but this unfortunately is the colour of most rivers in this, and increasingly more parts of China. But with Wuzhen, while not wanting to downplay the problems of water pollution, it is the beauty that sits on the water that is worth a visit every time.

I am happy to call this part of China home as I now have my own apartment in this pictureque little town and, for me, it is a nice place to call home. I hope you share my love of this little piece of Chinese history. I often browse through these photos and anyone with an eye for beauty must understand why I love this place.
